Cellnex Telecom and SIGFOX drive the “Internet of Things” ecosystem in the Valencia region

Cellnex Telecom and SIGFOX drive the “Internet of Things” ecosystem in the Valencia region

  • More than 80 professionals gathered at the Higher School of Telecommunications Engineering at the Polytechnic University of Valencia to learn about the advantages of using the Internet of Things in their business areas
  • Cellnex Telecom has rolled out a Sigfox network of more than 1,500 base stations in all kinds of environments. This technology can be developed in a great many sectors such as healthcare and water management. The characteristics of the network make it cheap to roll out

Cellnex Telecom, Europe’s leading independent operator of wireless telecommunications and broadcasting infrastructures, joined forces with Sigfox, a global provider of connectivity systems, to organise an information day at the Higher School of Telecommunications Engineering at the Polytechnic University of Valencia.
The aim of the meeting was to provide a full demonstration of their Internet of Things (IoT) network. The IoT is a connectivity model linking physical everyday objects such as a water meter, a rubbish container or an emergency lighting system and keeping them integrated into a network.

More than 80 professionals answered the invitation from Cellnex Telecom and Sigfox to see at first hand the advantages of having Spanish coverage by the Sigfox network rolled out by Cellnex Telecom. The characteristic feature of this network is that it can be rolled out cheaply and has an assured maintenance model that can be accessed at more than 1,500 base stations set up by Cellnex Telecom and located in all kinds of environments. These stations already use Sigfox technology with a territorial coverage that is significantly higher than in other European countries.
This network makes it possible to develop products that have already appeared on the market, such as the new-generation VeriSure alarms developed by SECURITAS DIRECT with SIGFOX dual connectivity. However, many more applications can be developed in the future and could take shape in sectors such as healthcare, waste and water management, smart infrastructures, remote control and many other currently developing markets.

It is estimated that more than 28 billion objects will be interconnected by 2020, and, against that backdrop, the alliance between Cellnex Telecom and Sigfox aims to provide Spain with an important role in this process. Gonzalo García de Frutos, Cellnex Telecom’s COO for IoT, is committed to localising companies able to generate solutions and create an ecosystem in which to develop synergies and turnover. “We are committed to a multi-technology environment to which a more efficient transmission model like Sigfox, supported by a national rollout, could be added in certain cases.”

About Cellnex Telecom

Cellnex Telecom is Europe’s leading independent operator of wireless telecommunications and broadcasting infrastructures.
It offers sites to rent for telecommunications operators and provides the most advanced audiovisual services to national, regional and local broadcasters.
Over the past four years, Cellnex Telecom has made a firm commitment to developing a network of over 15,000 sites and has enjoyed strong growth in the mobile phone towers area through agreements with operators like Telefónica and Yoigo in Spain, the purchase of the Italian company TowerCo in 2014, and the recent acquisition of 7,400 towers in Italy following the agreement with WIND to gain control of Galata.
It also develops solutions in the “smart city” projects field and has rolled out a smart communications network making it possible to connect objects and develop a strong ecosystem for the Internet of Things (IoT) in Spain.
Cellnex Telecom also plays a key role in rolling out telecommunications networks for security and emergency forces.

About SIGFOX

SIGFOX is the first and only cellular connectivity provider dedicated to the Internet of Things (IoT) and to M2M communications. Its ultra narrowband radio-based technology can provide wireless, long-range, two-way Internet connections to a wide range of devices. Its network removes cost and power consumption barriers in the implementation of IoT and M2M solutions to offer low-bandwidth communications and to significantly extend the life of the batteries to which devices are connected.

The SIGFOX network is rolled out through the SNO (SIGFOX Network Operator™) programme, which currently covers over one million square kilometres. SIGFOX has its head office in Labège, France, and has offices in San Francisco, California, in Paris and in Madrid, Spain.
