Cellnex UK street asset update – enhancing coverage, supporting communities
Great mobile coverage in our towns and cities ceased to be a ‘nice to have’ years ago. Not only do we now expect fast and reliable service as individuals, the wider social and economic benefits are well documented. Not least in terms of closing the digital divide and supporting local social inclusion plans.
That’s why it’s so important that Cellnex UK, together with our local authority and mobile operator partners, continues to expand the number of street assets we manage across the country – in dense urban and increasingly suburban areas – where mobile coverage and capacity is under pressure.
Along with our national network of larger macro telecoms sites, we have well established agreements in place with 16 London boroughs to site Small Cell radio equipment on street furniture in thousands of locations across the capital. This allows mobile operators to fill coverage gaps and enhance capacity where it’s needed most – at street level in busy pedestrianised and high footfall areas.
We have also secured the exclusive rights to market circa 400 Clear Channel ‘smart advertising’ kiosks for telecoms purposes in major cities across the country. You can read more about this here.
Most recently, we have signed an agreement with the London Borough of Bromley in South East London. Here, as a neutral host, we’re able to help all four UK mobile operators enhance their coverage and capacity across the borough in both urban and suburban areas – working closely with residents and the Council to support local connectivity needs.
We are continually looking to extend both the number of street assets available to operators in more and more locations. For example, we also have agreements with local authorities in Scotland, the West Midlands and are exploring a host of new opportunities up and down the country. Plus, in areas without suitable existing infrastructure, we are developing our own range of street asset solutions to ensure communities remain connected across the UK.
