In an era where billions of objects can be integrated within an information network new solutions are required to allow interaction

Billions of objects, devices, and sensors – collectively known as things – can provide insight in all sorts of situations. IoT (Internet of Things) is expected to rapidly increase to enhance our daily world with ‘smart’ and autonomous environments.

Cellnex UK and Everynet, a leading provider of IoT connectivity services, are partnering to promote the roll-out of new networks in the United Kingdom. The partnership will drive enhanced connectivity in crucial sectors such as utilities, agriculture, transportation and manufacturing, and help build Smart Cities.

The IoT networks are based on LoRaWAN® technology and will be deployed on Cellnex UK’s extensive telecommunications infrastructure networks and rely on Everynet’s carrier-grade and secure IoT network solution.

Cellnex UK and Everynet roll out national coverage across the UK. This coverage will facilitate numerous services, including tracking or monitoring assets throughout their supply chain, Smart Parking solutions to help digitise mobility and optimise the use of public highways and urban space, as well as creating a platform for the trial of new services that will allow the development of innovative future applications.

Cellnex UK will provide an integrated IoT platform for managing and delivering real-time (and remote) diagnostics. Everynet will provide and manage the LoRaWAN network infrastructure deployed for the data collection, providing a secure, fast and low-cost service to support real-time actions and decision-making. LoRaWAN technology is an open, widely adopted, long-range, low-power solution that helps build ultra-low cost IoT projects worldwide. Its characteristics provide reliability, low power and longevity.

Deployment of IoT networks on infrastructure near the point of use will allow people and connected objects to be faster and more reliable and provide significant societal and economic benefits. Smart IoT can help utilities save resources, reduce costs, and improve the impact on the environment. For example, in managing the Smart Grid, electric utilities can leverage IoT to optimise their services to their customers.

Everynet’s neutral-host business model enables mobile network operators (MNOs), mobile virtual network operators (MNVOs), application service providers (ASPs), managed service providers (MSPs) and internet service providers (ISPs) to offer carrier-grade Low-Power Wide-Area (LPWA) IoT services to their customers.

Connectivity has become a defining feature of the modern economy, reflected in the increasing investment in linking communities, economies and countries and promoting growth and productivity. The mobile industry has critical roles to play, particularly as we emerge from the global pandemic, in ensuring and maintaining connectivity for businesses, citizens and the wider community.

Small Cell Streetworks Project, Dublin

Cellnex participates in innovative programme to densify Dublin networks by repurposing street fixtures. 5G development has generated new opportunities for interconnection that can leverage the benefits of this technology. In large cities, moreover, densification has sometimes led to digital traffic jams that require new infrastructure. Cellnex Ireland, in collaboration with Bigbelly, a world leader in smart waste and recycling solutions for public spaces, has repurposed litter bins and equipped them for connectivity.

For a venue to be smart it requires the deployment of many types of sensors and actuators, devices and controllers as well as the infrastructure to connect all this. The sensors deployed will collect different types of data based on the type of sensor: temperature or humidity sensors, counters, level sensors, status sensors, etc.

The collected information is then exchanged through an IoT network where all sensors are connected and can interact ones with each other’s thanks to an appropriate control and analytics’ central system.

A network expected to connect thousands or millions of objects, often spread in remote areas and in difficult locations, and devoted to transport small pieces of information but on a regular basis –when an event happens– have to be specific. The so called Low Power Wide Area networks (LPWA) have been deployed to that purpose.

Cellnex manages various types of LPWA networks. Acting as infrastructure provider for SIGFOX in Spain and Portugal, also in Switzerland in collaboration with Heliot and rolling out LORA networks for private networks in Spain and Italy, the United Kingdom and Ireland through an agreement with Everynet.

Once the sensors and network are in place, the true value generation relies on securely collecting and processing large amounts of data from different sources in real time, to make decisions. Cellnex SmartBrain platform provides real-time reliable information for decision-making, co-creation of solutions designed around people and things and is able to create tangible and measurable results.

All, with the objective to help optimizing our client’s day-to-day processes in combination with their existing systems and solutions.

Quotes
This collaboration is a clear example of how synergies between the business and social sector can be generated. We need companies like Cellnex that provide knowledge and solutions to allow social organizations to move forward in the process of digital transformation and work in a more efficient and innovative way. The study has provided some very useful data allowing social entities to better manage housing while better serving people.
