Cellnex and Nokia will deploy the 5G network in ADIF logistics centres
The contract will have a completion period of 62 months and is worth €20.5 million.
The main objective is to boost digitalisation, process automation and cost reduction in rail freight transport.
Madrid, 19 January 2023. The joint venture formed by Cellnex, through its subsidiary Tradia, and Nokia, have been awarded the contract to deploy a private 5G network and a public 5G network in Adif Logistics Centres.
Adif Alta Velocidad (Adif AV) awarded both companies a €20.5 million contract to be executed within 62 months to boost digitalisation and, with it, automate processes and reduce costs in rail freight transport by rolling out the network to support 5G coverage in ten strategic logistics terminals.
The installation of a 5G network in the rail infrastructure will enable sustainable mobility by helping to interconnect the main transport nodes of the rail system. This will revitalise rail transport, particularly freight, generating a potential increase in this mode of transport and promoting the ecological transition towards more sustainable transport.
Implementing this infrastructure will guarantee advanced connectivity services for high-density environments, as well as bringing in various 5G technology applications which, among other things, will make it possible to use Internet of Things (IoT) networks, which are essential to monitoring critical assets.
The proposed solution will consist of two independent radio networks: a private 5G radio network for Adif’s own service provision –deploying coverage in the 2,300 MHz band throughout the terminal area– and, for operator services, another public 5G network based on sharing radio access elements, which will deploy umbrella coverage throughout the terminal area in the 700 MHz band and provide coverage in the 3,500 MHz band in high traffic density areas. The contract provides for this infrastructure to be made available to telecommunications operators to provide their services to areas where deployment would not be economically viable at present.
The contract awarded to the joint venture includes drafting the construction project, supply, works, and installing, maintaining and operating the infrastructure of this network in ten logistics terminals: Vicálvaro and Villaverde (Madrid); Zaragoza Plaza; Barcelona Can Tunis and Barcelona La Llagosta; Valencia Fuente San Luis; Sevilla Majarabique; Vitoria Júndiz; Bilbao; and Valladolid.
