Why are Community Relations important to Cellnex UK?
Wireless communications of all kinds, such as 5G mobile connectivity, are critical to ensure social inclusion and allow a vibrant and growing economy. We care about our relationship with the communities next to and surrounding our sites. At times, we need to upgrade, alter, or change a Cellnex UK site and we know that it is important to engage clearly and early with communities surrounding our site. We strive to develop and maintain a positive and transparent relationship with individuals, groups, and organisations in the areas where we operate.
How do we do this?
Our site activities follow the industry Code of Best Practice on Mobile Network Development.
We follow a Traffic Light Rating system that reflects what we need to do and any site specific sensitivities. Depending on this rating, our engagement may include a range of interested parties such as elected representatives, community groups and residents.
Community engagement usually occurs before or alongside any engagement that might be considered appropriate with the local planning authority, and usually before we make any necessary planning submission to the planning authority, where that applies.
Importantly, this community engagement is separate from any neighbour notification residents might receive from the local planning authorities as a statutory requirement of the town planning process, where this applies.
Some activity necessary at Cellnex UK sites does not require planning permission – even in those cases, we endeavour to engage with the local community out of courtesy. We look to respond to any questions or concerns expressed by communities and allow meaningful engagement with Cellnex UK.
What else do we do?
We proactively work with local authorities to explain how our shared communications infrastructure supports their economic development strategies, ensuring local communities are “connected”. Our Partnership Action Plan works to build relationships and create a dialogue with local authorities and their communities, increase public awareness about the role of Cellnex UK and help explain and demystify new technologies like 5G deployed at Cellnex UK sites. By proactively engaging with the communities where we work, we hope to create strong strategic partnerships and collaborations at local and regional levels.
