Enhancing air traffic management for the UK Armed Forces
Cellnex UK Site Share is partnering with the UK Ministry of Defence (MOD) to revolutionize terminal air traffic management at military airfields in the UK and overseas.
Listen to this article:
Through collaboration with Aquila, tasked with providing a safe and efficient Air Traffic Management system, Cellnex is facilitating the implementation of cutting-edge technology to support military flying and operations.
Now at initial operating capability, this programme of activity, known as the Marshall programme, is expected to support the MOD through 2037 and beyond.
Its significance lies in ensuring the safety and effectiveness of military aircraft operations, vital for safeguarding the UK’s airspace, countering terrorism, and conducting operations and exercises both domestically and internationally.
To meet the demands of this initiative, a new Wide Area Multilateration (WAM) aircraft surveillance technology was required, necessitating substantial infrastructure development. This involved establishing a network of towers nationwide to accommodate the new radar equipment.
Cellnex’s solution involved deploying 70 key New Point of Presence (PoP) locations and providing comprehensive site management services to enable Aquila to host its radar equipment across multiple sites in England, Scotland, and Wales. Close collaboration with Aquila ensured that the design and positioning of antennas and dishes at each site met the stringent requirements for effective communication with aircraft.
At each location, Cellnex managed civil engineering tasks, ensured power connectivity, and carried out equipment installation rigging to ensure safe and secure operations. Through these efforts, Cellnex is contributing to the transformation of military air traffic management, enhancing safety and efficiency for military operations.
Aquila’s Head of Performance and Procurement: “Cellnex’s support has been invaluable throughout this project for the MOD. From site location, through design to ongoing management, the ability to work with an experienced partner has delivered a professional, expert and timely deployment.”
