Cellnex Net-Zero Strategy

The climate challenge requires us to make a firm commitment to limit global warming in time, which implies a reduction in emissions until we achieve the complete decarbonisation of the economy. At Cellnex we want to reach NetZero by 2050 and for this we have drawn up a strategy with specific and ambitious medium and long term objectives.

The company’s Net-Zero strategy represents a significant step towards systemic carbon reduction, focusing on measurable goals and actionable initiatives. However, over the next years, Cellnex aims to enhance the credibility and rigour of its strategy by seeking validation and certification from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).

Cellnex Environmental and Climate Change Plan

In its second annual Environment and Climate Change report, Cellnex presents a complete overview of its actions to address climate change, drive the circular economy, protect biodiversity and progress towards becoming an emission neutral company.

"We measure our carbon footprint so we know how to reduce it"

Calculating our carbon footprint is a key step towards understanding the company’s impact on the environment and setting emission management and reduction targets. That’s why Cellnex calculates its carbon footprint annually based on ISO 14064-1:2018 standard and the results are checked annually by an independent third party in accordance with ISO 14064-3:2019 standard.

Cellnex conducted a comprehensive screening of its indirect emissions in 2020 to determine their relevance in line with the GHG Protocol Corporate Value Chain (Scope 3) and ISO 14064-1:2018 This was used as the basis to define emission reduction targets to keep the increase in global temperature below 1.5°C, as established by the Science Based Target (SBTi) and Business Ambition for 1.5°C initiatives. Cellnex has joined these initiatives, setting goals such as carbon neutrality for scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2025.

Goals

Reduce 70% absolute Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions

by 2030 vs 2020

100% renewable electricity

from 2025 through 2030

82% of suppliers and customers emissions with SBT

by 2030

Reduce 90% absolute Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions and absolute Scope 3

by 2050 vs 2020

Commitments

SCIENCE BASED TARGETS

  • Cellnex commits to reduce 70% absolute Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 2030 from a 2020 base year and reduce 90% absolute Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions and absolute Scope 3 by 2050 vs 2020 . We also commit to maintain 100% renewable electricity from 2025 through 2030 and value‑chain engagement covering 82% of suppliers and customers by emissions with SBT by 2030.

ENERGY TRANSITION PLAN

  • In 2021 an Energy Transition Plan was established in line with the Strategic Sustainability Plan to define a roadmap for the coming years. This plan aims to achieve responsible management of energy, minimising impact and optimising resources. In 2025, 100% of the overall electricity consumption was certified as renewable.

BUSINESS AMBITION FOR 1.5ºC

  • Cellnex joined Business Ambition for 1.5ºC commitment in 2021, setting SBT short-term emission reduction objectives to keep the global temperature increase below 1.5°C. The targets set in 2021, with a 2020 base year, have mostly been achieved. In 2025, Cellnex has updated its net‑zero strategy and secured validation of its revised science‑based targets, maintaining 2020 as the base year.

Offsetting scope 1 emissions

In 2025, Cellnex offset 5,142 tCO2e, representing 1% of the carbon footprint through certified mechanisms, achieving carbon neutrality in scope 1 emissions and residual Scope 2 emissions. Initiatives are located in rural European regions where Cellnex operates. In addition a clean‑cooking programmes is grounded in India.

Preparing infrastructures for future climate impacts

Cellnex has undertaken a climate scenario analysis based on the recommendations of the Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD). The company has a Global Risk Management System in place to integrate climate change risks into the general identification, analysis, action and monitoring process.

In line with TCFD recommendations for the identification of these risks and opportunities, we performed an analysis of physical and transition scenarios that make it possible to determine the resilience of the organisation to variations in climatic, political and economic trends arising from climate change.
