The transformative power of diversity
Equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) are no longer opportunistic concepts or mere ethical values but have become imperative to ensure the success and sustainability of business organisations that are also essential components of modern societies. “We must welcome diversity and include everyone to create better visions. These values are reflected positively in decision-making and project results, while facilitating a pleasant, motivating and inclusive working environment for all,” explains Marcha Van de Ven, Head of People & Organisation at Cellnex Cluster West.
The European leader in telecommunications infrastructures knows first-hand the value of embracing differences after integrating diverse teams in twelve countries in five years. The experience has highlighted the key importance of EDI culture in an organisation where more than fifty nationalities are represented and where professionals ranging from the so-called Generation Z or post-millennial generation to experienced baby boomers coexist.
Equity in the workplace is about ensuring that all people, regardless of their differences, have access to the same opportunities and are treated fairly. At Cellnex, this principle translates into policies and practices that seek to eliminate any form of discrimination, creating an environment where merit and competence are the determining factors. “Attracting diverse teams and ensuring equal opportunities while avoiding any discriminatory bias is of paramount importance to us. Inclusion and diversity are not only values to which we are unequivocally committed, but are also of great importance in driving our creativity, competitiveness, business strategy and ability to deliver solutions,” summarises Yolanda Menal, Cellnex’s Global Head of People.
With these principles anchored in the culture of the organisation, Cellnex wants to take advantage of the unique value of people as a transforming element to value talent, innovation and exceptional performance based precisely on differences.
“EDI is equal opportunities for all, but it is also about embracing other points of view. Without diversity and inclusion there are no different experiences; without different experiences there are no different points of view; without different points of view you cannot hope to challenge the status quo, which is necessary to adapt to a constantly changing reality,” sums up Małgorzata Rozwałka-Tłok, People & Organisation Director at Cellnex Poland.
“I want to contribute to making a positive impact not only on the people who are part of our organisation, but on society in general. As the daily routine clouds our days, I think it is essential that we look beyond and be aware of our ability to make an impact”, explained Anna Villa, ESG Expert and one of Cellnex’s EDI Champion.
“These champions are a group of employees from different countries, positions, genders and ages who collaborate in the implementation and promotion of the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion action plan in the countries where Cellnex operates,” describes Imen Toumi, Global Lead for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion at Cellnex. She adds, “EDI Champions act as catalysts for our EDI strategy. In addition to their current role in the organisation, they have added responsibility for creating an inclusive culture and safeguarding our priorities to be more equitable, inclusive and diverse”.
Since 2020, those volunteers have organised various collaboration and awareness programmes in their countries. From menopause, led by Jane Nash, EDI Champion at Cellnex UK; to meetings and initiatives related to mental health, managed by Alicja Sajecka, EDI Champion at Cellnex Poland; or a specific programme for the accelerated mentoring of female talent involving a melting pot of external and internal people, coordinated by Eduardo Fariña, EDI Champion at Cellnex Spain.
The importance of equity, diversity and inclusion at Cellnex is not simply a statement of principles, but a tangible commitment that is reflected in policies, programmes and daily practices. It is a dynamic commitment that evolves with time and the changing needs of society and business. By embracing and promoting diversity in all its forms, Cellnex not only builds a fairer and more equitable environment that reflects social and coexistence advances, but also drives innovation, performance and long-term sustainable success.
“It is necessary to have spaces for dialogue to improve both personally and professionally. We must push for a different future not only for ourselves, but for our children, our community, our society. If we don’t talk about the problem, it doesn’t exist,” Villa concludes with an unequivocal commitment.
