- The Cellnex project entitled “Zero Emissions Rural Site” has won an award in the “Efficient consumption” category of the Retina ECO Awards by reducing CO2 emissions to zero in rural telecommunications towers.
- The first edition of the Retina ECO Awards, held by El País Retina in collaboration with Capgemini, aims to recognise the best projects of 2020 in sustainability and combating climate change using technology.
Madrid, 7 September 2021. Cellnex Telecom’s “Zero Emissions Rural Site” project has won an award in the first edition of the Retina Eco Awards, held by El País Retina in collaboration with Capgemini, as the best project in the field of sustainability and combating climate change using technology in the “Efficient consumption” category. Cellnex was running for this award along with Vidrala’s “The most sustainable bottle in the world” and Cepsa’s “Detal Project”.
“Zero Emissions Rural Site” (ZERS) is a project designed and developed by Cellnex in its Mobility Lab in the Barcelona municipality of Castellolí. ZERS is an innovative zero-emissions telecommunications site that includes a solar panel, wind turbine, 5G antennas, mm-band links (mmW), video cameras, environmental sensors and various mobile connectivity technologies related to mobility and connectivity with vehicles. It is an autonomous energy generation, accumulation and management system designed for mobile communication sites with no access to the electricity grid and which have up to now been equipped with polluting generators.
An innovative project for the deployment of Rural 5G
This project combines energy generation capacities with connectivity services and is especially useful in rural areas. This type of technology and sustainable location has been applied in 5G pilot projects such as 5G LEAN, developed in a small town in the province of Soria, and is expected to be used in the 5G MED connected road and rail mobility project being developed as part of the 5G Mediterranean corridor, in the Figueras – Perpignan section.
The Company has already deployed eihgt nodes that are operating with this technology in the Cellnex Mobility Lab and are being tested in telecommunications towers. ZERS is designed to reduce manufacturing and installation costs to facilitate the distribution of mobile communication sites in rural or semi-rural areas, improving coverage and providing access to new communication services for a greater number of people across a larger area.
When collecting the award, Albert Cuatrecasas, General Manager of Cellnex in Spain stressed that “this award is a source of pride for our company, an achievement that shows that we are working in the right direction. Innovation, sustainability and respect for the environment are a structural pillar of the company’s strategy; we strive to continue improving in these areas every day, and this award is an acknowledgement of the effort and commitment of the entire Cellnex team. We would like to thank the PRISA Group, Capgemini and the Retina ECO Awards jury for choosing our zero-emission telecommunications infrastructure project in the “Efficient Consumption” category.
