At the Mobile World Congress 2014, Cellnex Telecom broadcast La Pasión del Prado (The Passion of El Prado), the RTVE documentary, in ultra high definition (UHD) on a DTT channel. This broadcast used the new High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) standard, doubling the image frequency to 50 frames per second, making it possible to enjoy DTT at a quality never seen before.
Cellnex Telecom made the broadcast from the Collserola telecommunications tower with a 5KW transmitter in DVB-T2 modulation. The area covered by these broadcasts reached 4 million people.
The RTVE documentary “La Pasión del Prado” offers a tour of 400 masterpieces, from the more than 9,000 paintings on show in the Prado Museum in Madrid. Using Ultra-High definition, it is possible to offer images of the works of art on display in the Prado Museum with an extremely high of level of detail, allowing the brush strokes and textures to be appreciated with breathtaking quality. The documentary is one of the first experiences of 4K in Europe, and the result of a partnership between TVE, Hispast and Cellnex Telecom with Apuntolapospo.
The coding for the documentary “La Pasión del Prado” in the new HEVC high-efficiency coding standard was carried out by the Spanish company Sapec. The Ultra-High Definition signal can be enjoyed on a 4K Sony television, with DVB-T2 reception and HEVC decoding and with a 4K screen resolution, which makes this television the most advanced in the world in terms of quality.
