Success Case
5G City (2017 – 2019)
5GCity is an EU-funded project within its program of aid to R & D H2020.
The H2020 5GCity project aims to design, develop and implement a distributed platform of Cloud, Edge and 5G-Radio with neutral host capacity to allow sharing infrastructure of information technology (IT) and vertical actors. The aim is to use the available technologies such as network sharing and virtualization of functions in the network. Thus SDN (Software Defined Network), NFV (Network Functions Virtualization) and Network Slicing.
The idea of this project is to deploy 3 pilots in the cities of Barcelona, Bristol and Lucca focused on 6 very specific use cases related to the deployment of 5G networks in cities:
1- Unauthorized Waste Dumping Prevention
2- Neutral Host
3- Video Acquisition and Production
4- UHD Video Distribution
5- Mobile Backpack Unit for Real Time Transmission
6- CCAM (Cooperative, Connected and Automated Mobility)
The 5GCity architecture is based on a new framework of “neutral host”, while presenting how the use cases will be implemented demonstrating the benefits of this model for infrastructure owners and vertical actors in a 5G scenario. The neutral host model, in order to meet the 5G requirements in terms of bandwidth, coverage and latency, must also take advantage of Edge resources. This scenario corresponds to a MEC network architecture (Multi-Access Edge Computing) that allows large computing capabilities in the cloud and an IT and computing services management environment at the edge of the cellular network.
Cellnex Telecom aims to deploy the network infrastructure in the Barcelona pilot to demonstrate the functionalities and capabilities of a neutral host acting in an environment with different operators and entities acting as verticals.
