Cellnex’s emission reduction targets approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi)
The science-based targets defined by Cellnex under its Sustainability plan are aligned with the ‘Business Ambition for 1.5°C’ commitment, consolidating itself as one of the leading companies in the telecommunications sector in the fight against climate change.
Barcelona, 24 June 2021. Cellnex, Europe’s leading operator of wireless telecommunications, reinforces its commitment to the fight against climate change by setting concrete targets and milestones for the emission reduction validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).
This initiative, aligned with the Paris Agreement, aims to help set science-based climate change strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. It aims to limit global warming to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels and to continue efforts to limit warming to 1.5°C.
In this connection, Cellnex reaffirms the commitment acquired in 2019 with ‘Business Ambition for 1.5°C’ and, in accordance with the objectives approved by SBTi, it commits to:
- Reduce absolute Scope 1 and 2 Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions and Scope 3 GHG emissions from fuel and energy-related activities 70% by 2030 from a 2020 base year.
- It also commits to increase annual sourcing of renewable electricity from 0% in 2020 to 100% by 2025.
- Cellnex also commits to reduce absolute scope 3 emissions from purchased goods and services and capital goods GHG emissions 21% by 2025 from a 2020 base year.
The transition towards a low-carbon economy is one of the lines of action of the company’s Strategic Sustainability Plan, which aims, among other objectives, to mitigate the impact of the company’s activity on climate change.
