Cellnex Telecom will broadcast three 4K contents on a single DTT channel
This broadcast will be watchable in Seville, Madrid and Barcelona, during the second 4K SUMMIT
Seville, 10 November 2016. Cellnex Telecom is to take part once again at the 4K SUMMIT, the annual meeting of the audiovisual sector held in Seville on 10 and 11 November.
In this edition, the telecommunications infrastructure operator will broadcast three 4K quality contents through a single TDT channel. RTVE, Rohde & Schwarz and LG will work with the company to perform this demonstration.
This broadcast is made possible thanks to the efficiency provided by using techniques such as statistical multiplexing, DVB-T2 modulation and HEVC coding. All these technological advances have made it possible to ensure the highest quality of 4K image of the contents broadcast within a single transmission channel.
The demonstration will feature LG OLED 65EF950V and 65EG960V TV sets and an LG Super UHD 75UH780V, which Cellnex Telecom will locate in the Ribera de Triana hotel, which will host the 4K SUMMIT for the second year in a row.
A simulcast going out to 10 million people in Seville, Madrid and Barcelona
Cellnex Telecom will simulcast during the 4K SUMMIT from the broadcasting centres of Valencina (Sevilla), Torrespaña (Madrid) and Collserola (Barcelona) allowing all three cities to witness the technological progress represented by the statistical multiplexing of 4K content in HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding)
These are the receiving channels:
Seville: channel 36
Barcelona: channel 43
Madrid: Channel 32
Statistical multiplexing maximises quality when various contents are broadcast together.
The statistical multiplexing technique ensures the highest quality while transmitting three 4k contents simultaneously from a single transmitter. Instead of dividing transmission capacity equally, each content is distributed the number of bits required by the image at all times. This technique, already used for DTT broadcasts, makes it possible to maximise transmissions of multiple contents over a single channel. The new feature this time is the application of statistical multiplexing to HEVC encoded content.

RTVE’s participation in this demonstration will be showing scenes from the documentary “Reina Sofía Museum” while Rohde & Schwarz are providing the statistical coding system.
Apart from the technical demonstrations, the event brings together the top international experts involved in developing the European audiovisual sector. The 4K SUMMIT expert panel will include Xavi Redón, Cellnex senior product manager, who will present the advantages of terrestrial broadcasting as a universal medium for bringing 4K Ultra High Definition signals into the home.
