Securitas Direct renews and extends its contract with Cellnex to continue offering the best IoT connectivity services in Spain and Portugal
For a period of 15 years
Securitas Direct plans to gradually increase the type and number of devices connected to the Cellnex & Sigfox IoT network
With Sigfox, Cellnex will up the capacity of the IoT network in Spain and extend its coverage to Portugal
Madrid, 18 July 2019. Securitas Direct has renewed and extended the Internet of Things (IoT) connectivity services contract with Cellnex Telecom as part of its commitment to offer the best and most innovative protection services to its more than 1.2 million customers. This agreement allows Securitas Direct to maintain its exclusive ATN network, increasing its size, coverage and capabilities to continue to develop innovative solutions.
Cellnex Telecom will increase sixfold the current capacity of the IoT network, based on Sigfox technology, to provide it with more features, such as the ability to transmit images and send audio messages. It will also extend its coverage to Portugal with Sigfox, becoming the operator of the network in both countries.
As a result of the agreement and of the greater capacity, robustness and resilience of the network, Securitas Direct also plans to expand and diversify the type of devices and services that will be connected over the coming years. The contract has been signed for a total of fifteen years, starting with a six-year period followed by an extension of nine more years.
Albert Cuatrecasas, Managing Director of Cellnex Spain, stated that “the increase in the capacity of the IoT network with Sigfox and the agreement signed with Securitas Direct undoubtedly mark a turning point in the IoT connectivity services that we have been providing since 2015, when we rolled out the first Internet of Things-oriented network in Spain with a national coverage of 95% of the population.”
There are currently more than 2 million devices connected to and using our IoT network with Sigfox in Spain on a daily basis, providing security services, remote monitoring of light consumption, water telemetry, waste management, tracking of materials, smart parking, energy efficiency and prevention of home risks, among others. Now we will extend this coverage to Portugal, we will have networks with more and better benefits in both countries, and we will increase exponentially the number of devices connected to them.”
Cristina Rivas, Director of Technology at Securitas Direct, stated “this agreement with Cellnex, one of the best technological partners, is the confirmation of our commitment to IoT networks like Sigfox as an alternative channel to conventional networks, which allow us to provide a unique and differential security service to our customers. The main advantage is that we have an additional communication channel and unique anti-inhibition capabilities, which are critical in our service and which are not available through traditional operators’ networks”.
For Rebecca Crowe, Managing Director of Sigfox Spain “The renewal of the trust that Securitas Direct has placed in Sigfox over these years is further proof that our network is a reliable alternative for security services, but also a way to handle the mass adoption of the IoT. One of our goals is to promote a public support network that could provide service when main communications fail, or in cases in which a network does not respond due to an unforeseen or intentional attack.”
