In collaboration with Barcelona City Council
- The company has deployed a multi-operator infrastructure for the America’s Cup that will remain on the city’s coastline after the sporting event is over
- It is a distributed mini antenna system (outdoor DAS) installed in Barcelona City Council’s urban fittings on the beaches to provide service to the many users who use them daily
Barcelona, 19 September 2024. Cellnex, Europe’s largest telecommunications towers and infrastructures operator, has deployed a multi-operator mobile coverage solution on the seafront of the city of Barcelona to reinforce and provide 5G coverage to the 3.5 kilometres of the Barcelona coastline running from Sant Sebastià beach to Mar Bella beach passing through the beaches of Sant Miquel, Barceloneta, Somorrostro, Nova Icària and Bogatell.
Cellnex has deployed this infrastructure for the 37th America’s Cup. This sailing competition, which officially began on 22 August and will end on 27 October, is the third largest global sporting event with the highest audience and economic impact, after the Olympic Games and the World Cup.
Specifically, and within the agreement with Barcelona City Council, Cellnex has installed a distributed mini-antenna system (DAS – Distributed Antenna Systems) on the Council’s physical elements and street fittings on the city’s beaches to serve the tens of thousands of people who use them throughout the year. In this connection, the infrastructure has been designed to remain permanently after this sporting event is over.
Marta Rubí, Commercial Director Public Administration at Cellnex Spain highlighted that “DAS systems serve to reinforce the connectivity of any mobile operator in areas with a high influx and concentration of people, such as the Barcelona coastline. We are also deploying such solutions in urban centres, stadiums, shopping centres, large buildings, networks and metro stations, among other locations, which allow us to expand and densify the capacity of the network to provide the public with good connectivity at all times”.
