Cellnex Net-Zero Strategy

The climate challenge requires us to make a firm commitment to limit global warming in time, which implies a reduction in emissions until we achieve the complete decarbonisation of the economy . At Cellnex we want to reach NetZero by 2050 and for this we have drawn up a strategy with specific and ambitious medium and long term objectives.

Cellnex Environmental and Climate Change Plan

In its second annual Environment and Climate Change report, Cellnex presents a complete overview of its actions to address climate change, drive the circular economy, protect biodiversity and progress towards becoming an emission neutral company.

"We measure our carbon footprint so we know how to reduce it"

Calculating our carbon footprint is a key step towards understanding the company’s impact on the environment and setting emission management and reduction targets. That’s why Cellnex calculates its carbon footprint annually based on ISO 14064-1:2018 standard and the results are checked annually by an independent third party in accordance with ISO 14064-3:2019 standard.

Cellnex conducted a comprehensive screening of its indirect emissions in 2020 to determine their relevance in line with the GHG Protocol Corporate Value Chain (Scope 3) and ISO 14064-1:2018 This was used as the basis to define emission reduction targets to keep the increase in global temperature below 1.5°C, as established by the Science Based Target (SBTi) and Business Ambition for 1.5°C initiatives. Cellnex has joined these initiatives, setting goals such as carbon neutrality for scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2025.

Goals

Reduce 70% of scope 1 and 2 emissions and scope 3 emissions from fuel and energy-related activities

by 2030

100% sourcing of renewable electricity

by 2025

Reduce 21% of scope 3 emissions from purchased goods and services and capital goods

by 2025

Commitments

SCIENCE BASED TARGETS

  • Cellnex commits to reduce absolute scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions and scope 3 GHG emissions from fuel and energy-related activities 70% by 2030 from a 2020 base year. We also commit to increase annual sourcing of renewable electricity from 0% in 2020 to 100% by 2025 and also to reduce absolute scope 3 emissions from purchased goods and services and capital goods GHG emissions 21% by 2025 from a 2020 base year.

ENERGY TRANSITION PLAN

  • In 2021 an Energy Transition Plan was established in line with the Strategic Sustainability Plan to define a roadmap for the coming years. This plan aims to achieve responsible management of energy and water consumption, minimising impact and optimising resources.

BUSINESS AMBITION FOR 1.5ºC

  • Cellnex joined the “Business ambition for 1.5°C” Global Compact to limit the increase in global temperature to 1.5ºC. This initiative sets out two areas of action: “Science based targets in line with 1.5°C” and “Net-zero emissions commitment”.

Offsetting scope 1 emissions

In 2023 Cellnex offset 3016.01 tCO2e by acquiring 3017 CER (certified emission reduction) credits in the Wind Energy in India Tamil Nadu project, which was awarded the prestigious Gold Standard certification.

Preparing infrastructures for future climate impacts

Cellnex has undertaken a climate scenario analysis based on the recommendations of the Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD). The company has a Global Risk Management System in place to integrate climate change risks into the general identification, analysis, action and monitoring process.

In line with TCFD recommendations for the identification of these risks and opportunities, we performed an analysis of physical and transition scenarios that make it possible to determine the resilience of the organisation to variations in climatic, political and economic trends arising from climate change.

Environmental projects

  • ZERO EMISSION RURAL SITE (Parcmotor Castellolí)
  • 5G LEAN (Rural site)
  • ANDALUSIA 5G (Shelter)

1/3

Autonomous energy generation, accumulation and management system for cellular/vehicular communication sites without access to the electricity grid that were previously powered by highly polluting generators.

The main goal of the LEAN project is to provide a mobile broadband Internet service in areas where it would not be economically viable to deploy and operate standard infrastructure, either because the area has few potential users (rural locations) or because the end users have low purchasing power (emerging countries). To this end, the project designed a solar and wind energy powered site that provides mobile broadband connectivity and advanced IoT services.

Arrow

Fixed wireless access solution for 5G (FWA), part of the Red.es 5G project in Andalusia, which also includes other specific use cases linked to 5G, such as security at large gatherings and autonomous picking.

  • ESTIBA

1/1

Digital transformation of Spanish ports to meet the growing demand for improved efficiency, economy, safety and environmental sustainability.

  • BICISENDAS

1/1

Research and development of innovative solutions for the deployment of bike lanes, with the goal of improving both user safety and comfort and environmental sustainability.

  • SUPPORT FOR UNIVERSAL ACCESS TO EDUCATION

1/1

Cellnex is committed to working with other organisations to tackle climate change. In this spirit, the company works with Ambientech, an educational portal with science, health and environment content, contributing to the ‘Climate emergency‘ and ‘Circular economy‘ education pathways.
