How to boost your cell phone signal in a ‘metal building’

In the modern world, encountering a dead zone in a metal-structured building can be more than a mere inconvenience.

It can disrupt business operations, emergency communications, and personal connections. Whether it’s an office, hospital or shopping centre, understanding the underlying issues is key.

In this article, we will explain the reasons behind signal disruptions, and the in-building solutions that enhance in-building connectivity.

 

Why does metal affect cell phone signals?

Mobile phone signals are essentially radio waves, a form of electromagnetic radiation that can be blocked or reflected by certain materials, such as metal. 

The use of metal in the construction of modern buildings creates a formidable barrier that prevents mobile phone signals from efficiently entering a building.

 

Factors that contribute to poor reception in metal building

Several factors contribute to the severity of signal degradation in metal buildings:

 

Building size and composition

The physical characteristics of a building significantly influence cell phone signal reception.

Metal roofs, walls, and structural elements such as beams and columns can effectively shield the interior from external radio waves. Metallised glass – used for thermal efficiency in many buildings – has the same effect.

This makes it difficult for mobile phone users within the building to maintain a reliable connection.

 

Location relative to cell towers

A building’s proximity to cell towers directly affects the strength of the incoming signal. 

Buildings that are situated far away from cell towers are at a disadvantage, as the distance reduces signals before they even reach any barriers.

 

Solutions to boost your phone signal in a metal building

Metal buildings, while offering durability and versatility, present unique challenges for maintaining strong mobile signals. Fortunately, there are several solutions to enhance phone signal strength and ensure reliable communication within these environments.

 

Distributed antenna systems (DAS)

For larger metal buildings or complexes, a Distributed Antenna System (DAS) can provide comprehensive coverage. 

DAS involves a network of connected antennas distributed within a building to provide mobile signal throughout.

 

Repeaters

For smaller buildings, a repeater system can extend mobile signals into a building. An externally located ‘donor’ antenna captures the signal from the nearest cell tower

The signal is then boosted and retransmitted within the building. Whilst a cost-effective solution, it provides no additional network capacity, so is best suited to smaller buildings or those with low footfall.

 

Neutral Host solutions

A Neutral Host In-Building (NHIB) solution is a type of DAS system being introduced in the UK.

It is ideal for small and mid-sized buildings and provides mobile signal with dedicated additional capacity whilst minimising equipment space, power consumption, and deployment timelines.

 

Boosting Manchester City’s stadium connectivity with in-building wireless solutions
